Book Review: Then It Fell Apart – Moby

This is an excellent book to read if you’ve ever thought that fame and fortune will make you happy. It really does show that peace is an inner job and not dependent on anything happening on the outside.

I never intended to even read this, but I picked it up in the bookstore and got drawn in by one of the countless unbelievable stories of being a famous musician. I got so drawn in by the insanity of it all that I finished reading it in two days.

This memoir is fascinating, unbelievable, and also unfortunately, repetitive towards the end. At first, the parties, the drunken and drug-filled situations, and craziness of fame just blew my mind. But then, I wanted it to end. I wondered, Where’s the redemption story? Where’s the inspiration? The turn around? If you go through that much darkness would there not be some light?

Also, I would have liked to read more about Moby’s music creation process. The memoir did touch a little on the music but not enough for my liking. The tales about promiscuity, substance abuse and fame overpower a memoir that could have been pretty powerful if it was balanced with a little more inspiration and insight.
