About thirteen years ago, someone told me that he can’t believe that he gets paid to do the work that he does. He stated that he enjoys his work so much, that he would gladly do it for free. That conversation kind of planted a seed in me. My idea of work up to that point was mostly that it was a harsh slog of difficulties. But the conversation told me that maybe it doesn’t have to be that way. I thought about it a lot and kept encountering the idea in different ways and on other occasions.
Not long after the conversation, another person gifted me Kahlil Gibran’s The Prophet. I never really read it front to back, but I would sometimes read a paragraph here or there. One night while flipping through it, I stumbled on Gibran’s ideas on work. It aligned completely with this idea that one should love the work that you do.
Work is Love Made Visible. It resonated with me.
Today, this is true for most of the work that I do. It’s also a reminder that the universe speaks if we’re willing to listen.
