Making a small piece of art isn’t necessarily hard, especially if you’ve done it before. Making a small drawing might take a few hours. A first draft of a short story might take an afternoon. Creating an interesting guitar riff—a few minutes.
Continue reading “Do An Experiment – Make A Tiny Piece Of Art”It feels good when we are praised for the work that we do, but I think that most people will admit that this is the exception not the rule. More often than not, someone will strongly dislike the work that we do or the art that we create.
If we don’t experience blatant criticism, subdued negativity takes the form of endless disapproving questions. I always try to answer those with grace but I can’t lie, it does irk me. But I’ve spent years on the path less travelled and I’ve learnt that other people’s opinions (mostly) don’t matter. What matters when it comes to the art that we create is:
1) That we are proud of our own work, and
2) That we listen to the right feedback.

I recently made a short video on how to get creative work done. The gist of the video is that if we spend a lot of time either stuck in mental loops or being emotionally reactive, we wont get a lot of creative work done.
This video was intended for creatives but really applies to any work, any craft, any pursuit. It’s hard to get any meaningful work done if you’re siphoning off your attention to fear or outrage or any of these difficult emotions.
