Lucid Dreams and Dream Interpretation

Some people believe that if you respect the messages in your dreams, you should never try to lucid dream or control aspects of the dream in any way. I don’t agree. It’s in the act of trying to control, that we realise what our true obstacles are.

I’m using the word “control” in the positive sense here, meaning that you have an intention to accomplish something and you are directing focus towards that goal.

Most lucid dreamers understand that not all goals are easily attained in dreams. We might be able to accomplish our mission of, say, flying to Jupiter, but more often than not, we will face obstacles if we have a lofty goal like that. The obstacles that we come across give us valuable insight that we can apply to our waking life. The obstacles in lucid dreams are the dream messages.

Let’s take a common lucid dream activity: flying.

Interpreting Dreams Correctly

Interpreting dream messages correctly takes practice. It also requires some spiritual maturity. Our dreams are not interested in our egocentric agendas, but rather our authentic soul growth and maturity. It is a good idea to keep this in mind when we first attempt dream interpretation.

As interesting and meaningful as dreamwork can be, it can also be difficult. Dreams can point to our destructive tendencies and those things that we are avoiding. It can be unapologetic in its requirement for change around these things. But as a foundational principle, we should make sure that we are interpreting our dreams correctly.

Why Write Down Your Dreams

Not many of us take our dreams seriously. But we should.

If you can imagine the best advice, from the wisest teacher, that is exactly tailored to your temperament and situation, then you have an idea of what dream advice is.

Why would you not write that down?

Jung’s Moon Phase | What To Do When You Are Suddenly And Unexpectedly Bombarded with Psychic Information

In Memories, Dreams, Reflections, Jung writes about a time in his life where he had many extraordinary dreams and visions. Jung had countless dreams throughout his life—some of which he discusses in detail in his memoir—but from about 1913 to 1917 his exposure to unconscious information was ramped up.

During that period he had accurate visions and dreams about the world war. He encountered various archetypes and, believe it or not, he even received guidance from a non-physical spiritual guide, called Philemon. I found this fascinating. How many scientifically-minded thinkers of Jung’s calibre will admit to seeing visions and spirit guides? I would venture a guess and say, not many.

Dreams Reveal Bad Trajectories

Over the years I’ve seen that we can avoid bad outcomes by paying close attention to our dreams. Problematic situations are revealed first in our dreams. Things take time to manifest in the physical. This is true even if it sounds like something a law of attraction guru would have said. There is a lag time between terrible dream and physical outcome. And if we assume that dreams are there to aid us, then we can see that even terrifying dreams are there to guide us away from destructive paths.

This is valuable.

Dreams—and especially nightmares—can empower us to grow beyond our shortcomings.

Dreams and Synchronicity | Lessons from Jung

One of the most profound books I’ve ever read is Jung’s memoir, Memories, Dreams, Reflections. Not only did this book completely transform how I relate to my dreams, it also gave me deep insights into philosophical questions that I’d had for a number of years. Jung was a remarkable individual; he displayed extraordinary self-awareness and insight from a very young age. It really is hard to fathom just how insightful this man was. But for me personally, Jung’s writings changed the trajectory of my life in very meaningful ways.

Dreamwork: How to interpret your dreams (and stay relatively sane)

woman dreaming pen sketch

Dream interpretation can be difficult for many reasons. For one thing we might not always know what our dreams are trying to tell us. Sometimes it might seem like our dreams are contradicting itself. Also, prophetic dreams can be terrifying and instill fear for some possible future outcome that we would do anything to avoid.

This article discusses some of the challenges related to dream interpretation and gives a few basic guidelines to navigate them.
