I once heard an influencer claim that she was born a great writer. When I scanned through her book I saw that her self-assessment was wrong. She did, however, have quite a following.
Non-readers and non-writers are often not aware of the difference between good and bad writing. (My previous post expanded on this.) This makes it easy to make subjective claims such as “I was born a great writer.” But if we really want to become good writers we have to be more objective. We have to be more rigorous in our craft. We have to, 1) become great readers, and 2) become consistent writers.
Doing something with skill is always more difficult than doing something without concern for quality. Toiling for endless hours to master the art of writing doesn’t appeal to everyone. It’s easier to hide behind the idea that you’re either born with it or not. But I’ve always felt that the process of becoming a great writer is similar to the process of becoming a great mathematician, or programmer, or guitar player. You have to apply buttocks to seat and work.
